1151 | 794 | Minority place-name standardization in Poland in the light of the General Theory of Name and Naming Policy | Wojciech Włoskowicz

The aim of the paper is to outline the minority place-name standardization in Poland with the conceptual framework of the currently developed general theory of name and naming policy (GTNP). Firstly, relations between the concept of language policy and the concept of name & naming policy are outlined and illustrated with examples of situation in Poland. Secondly, most important concepts and classifications of the proposed theoretical framework are briefly discussed. These include: extralinguistic and linguistic circumstances, axiological factors as initial values, desired effects or results (goals), and means and methods, policy-makers and policy executors, as well as distinctions between global and local policies, overt and covert policies, prescriptive and customary policies, formal and pragmatic policies. Thirdly, this network of concepts and classifications is used to structure, discuss, and explain the rules and practice of minority place-name standardization in Poland. Therefore, the paper is meant to 1) deploy the developed theory to discuss a specific field of toponymic policy and to test the theory’s explanatory power in this area and 2) to provide session participants with a selection of essential facts, rules, regulations, and practices concerning minority place-name standardization in Poland.
