1206 | 690 | Teaching gender: reflections and experiences from the University Social Geography course. | Dr. Alena Rochovska

In this presentation I will share my experiences from teaching gender at Comenius University in Bratislava – Slovakia within the course of Social geography. My contribution will be based on three main points. One point of view is gender as a one form of inequality (among social, racial, age, inequalities…), which is generally accepted as an important form of inequality with its spatial expresion. Based on the data and specific examples, it is possible to point out to various forms of inequality that persist in society. Another form of acceptance occurs when we talk about gender in the context of feminism, which is often understood in a negative context. Feminist geographies are often associated by students with the so-called gender ideology, which is presented in the media as an ideology harmful to society, which aims to destroy families. Compared to the first point, when the discussion is smooth, turbulent arguments occur, and we often use role-playing or other forms to provoke discussion as a teaching tool. Third point is related to female representation in the higher education of geography in Slovakia. The representation of women, especially with the title of professor, is very low, which affects the representation of gender-oriented topics in the curriculum or dissertation topics. After my fifteen years of expertise of teaching „gender perspective“ it is possible clearly to see the change among students, but gradually also among colleagues in the department and in the whole university’s understanding. In my presentation I would like to share and discuss these practical experiences about teaching geography in higher education.
