For years in Italy, settlements have been studied in terms of depopulation and building degradation and loss. In recent years, part of the remaining has been invested in restructuring and functional transformation processes._x000D_
There are borderline instances of ghost villages and hamlets that have become tourist attractions or are used by artists. Almost everywhere, there are a lot of small towns and districts where there has been a recovery with respect to secondary residences, for new urban incomers and for-profit accommodations. A revitalization of the economic environment linked to local products, social activities, small enterprises, and tourism is also taking place._x000D_
What has been said is not just valid when you look at the settlement system and the socioeconomic context. This is also the case when we examine the complementary rail communication system, parts of which have been largely abandoned. Public policies, general awareness-raising and committee aggregation in this case have led to reconversions and new uses. _x000D_
By focusing on north-eastern Italy (Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige and Friuli Venezia Giulia), we reflect on what has happened and what is happening in this sector as greenways, rails to trails and tourist trails. We also reflect on how the change detected is linked to varied types of tourism and uses for leisure; in particular, that is, to cycling, railway tourism and trekking long distance routes in the cases under study as examples. Other types of tourism complete and complement them.
